Cockroaches In Davenport
Davenport Iowa is home to several species of cockroaches including German and American cockroaches.
German Cockroaches
At their peak, German cockroaches grow up to 5/8ths of an inch. Despite being smaller than others, they’ll create big problems for you. German cockroaches are unique thanks to the distinct racing stripes on the back of their head. A female German cockroach can produce 5 eggs capsules with up to 40 eggs during her life.
American Cockroaches
American cockroaches are huge with some of them reaching two inches in length. They’re reddish-brown and capable of flying. One thing to know about American cockroaches is that these pests can live for a long time. They’ll mature in two years and live in your home for three or more years. Suffice to say, you must notify an exterminator so they can get rid of the pests for you. Otherwise, they’re going to stick around for a few years.
Other common cockroaches in our area include Pennsylvania wood cockroaches, Oriental cockroaches, and Surinam cockroaches.
Pennsylvania Wood Cockroaches
Despite belonging to the same species, male and female Pennsylvania wood cockroaches look much different. While the male members reach an inch, females are usually only three-quarters of an inch. They’re native to the Eastern United States but often reach Iowa. The good news is that Pennsylvania wood cockroaches are usually not pests. They’re attracted to blocked gutters, woodpiles, and wood siding.
Spotted Mediterranean Cockroaches
These cockroaches are only a third of an inch with dark speckles. They’re native to Europe. They’ve been living in the United States since the mid-1900s. Since their arrival, they’ve been reproducing and spreading. These cockroaches rarely reproduce inside, but they may enter your home. Since they’re attracted to bright lights, they’ll fly toward your home at night.
Oriental Cockroaches
Oriental cockroaches grow over an inch in length. Males develop wings that cover most of their bodies, but females never develop wings. These cockroaches like infesting sewer systems and older structures. They’re a lot like American cockroaches, but they’re cold-hardy. They can be found outside feeding on feces and garbage even when it is cold.
Smokey Brown Cockroaches
These cockroaches are larger than others since they sometimes reach an inch and a half. These cockroaches are reddish-brown, and they are commonly found in the southern states. They sometimes travel in shipping boxes to reach Iowa and other northern states.
Surinam Cockroaches
Surinam cockroaches are less than an inch in length. They have light tan wings and a dark plate near their head. These cockroaches prefer living in warm areas. You might find them in Davenport from time to time. When you find them, they’ll be found in greenhouses because they want to stay warm. The Surinam cockroach species have no men. There are only female Surinam cockroaches. They give live birth once the eggs have hatched.
Brown-Banded Cockroaches
Davenport is also home to brown-banded cockroaches although they’re rare. These cockroaches are half an inch in length. It is common for people to mistake these cockroaches for German cockroaches. Look at the back of the cockroach’s head. If it has racing stripes, it is a German cockroach.
Reasons
Cockroaches enter homes for numerous reasons. Many cockroach species invade residences because they’re looking for food. Otherwise, they could be searching for ways to access steam tunnels and sewer systems.
